19 injured, 3 critically, in restaurant explosion in Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, A total of 19 people were injured, three critically, in what is being treated as a gas explosion at a restaurant in the Xiaogang District of the southern port city Thursday, firefighters said.

The explosion shattered windows and glass doors at the restaurant at about 7:00 p.m, injuring 19 people inside and outside the eatery. Three of the injured suffered burns on 15-30 percent of their bodies and are currently being treated in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, police and firefighters said.

They quoted witnesses as saying the explosion in the restaurant’s kitchen was so powerful that many customers were thrown to the floor and even passers by outside the restaurant were injured.

“It was like the place was bombed. It’s terrible,” one witness was quoted as saying by the police.

A total of 18 fire trucks and 24 firefighters and paramedics were rushed to the scene, putting out the fire in 25 minutes, police said.
