City Kicks off Asian Junior Athletics Championships 2014

The opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championships 2014 took place at Taipei Gymnasium on June 11. On behalf of Taipei, Deputy Mayor Tim Ting welcomed 600 athletes from 35 countries and promised to impress them with the warm hospitality of the host city.

During his address, Ting noted that it is the first time the City has ever hosted a major international athletics competition. He attributed the successful bid to the years of efforts by Chinese Taipei Track and Field Association. The significance of the games not only means an honor to the island but also a source of pride for the capital city.Ting took the opportunity to introduce the athletes to the traits of Taipei, which boasts a diversity of cultures including vibrant night markets and historical heritage. As Taipei gears up for the upcoming 2017 Universiade, the deputy mayor hopes to boost the city’s international profile through vigorous sports exchanges.Ting also received a plaque of appreciation from Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad, President of the Asian Athletics Association.The 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championships will run from June 12 to 15. A total of 59 Chinese Taipei players will fight it out against athletes from 35 Asian countries.
