Mayor Warns Against Enterovirus Threat

With Taiwan entering the peak season of enterovirus activity, Mayor Hau Lung-bin visited Yu Hang Kindergarten on June 17 to promote the prevention of the virus and educate kids on the importance of hygiene through interactive sessions and quiz games.

Hau reckoned that infants and children are among the groups most vulnerable to enterovirus. He urged youngsters, teachers, and parents to wash hands frequently, which is considered the most effective way of fighting against enterovirus infections. The mayor also demonstrated the correct method of washing hands. The steps are: 1) Wet your hands; 2) Apply soap, and lather and scrub; 3) Rinse your hands thoroughly; 4) Cup your hands to hold some water and cleanse the faucet before turning it off; 5) Dry your hands. According to the Department of Health, enterovirus season begins in early April and peaks in June. Statistics from Centers for Disease Control indicate that as of June 16, 2014, the island has reported four confirmed enterovirus infection cases with severe complications. A total of 508 classes have been suspended this year due to the spread of enterovirus in Taipei alone.
