TRTC: More MRT Stations to Allow Boarding with Bicycles

Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) announced that MRT Shipai Station, MRT Jiantan Station, and MRT NTU Hospital Station will allow passengers to bring their bicycles onto trains during weekends and holidays.

The new measure will be implemented starting June 28.TRTC reminds passengers carrying bicycles to use the elevator and to board either the first or the last carriage. They should also be mindful of other passengers during travel on the MRT, including elders, young children, pregnant women, passengers on wheelchairs, and those with baby strollers. After the implementation of the measure, the majority of stations in Taipei’s MRT network will be open to bicycle carry-on. The only exceptions are the following stations: MRT Taipei Main Station, MRT Daan Station, MRT Tamsui Station, MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, MRT Nangang Exhibition Hall Station, and the 24 stations of MRT Wenhu Line.Statistics show that the number of passengers bringing their bicycles onboard trains is on the rise. In 2011, the number approached 80,000; the figure jumped to 94,000 in 2013. Between January and May this year, over 50,000 people have taken advantage of this policy. The fare for 1 passenger with 1 bicycle is NT$80, regardless of distance traveled on the MRT.TRTC reminds passengers with bicycles not to disembark or transfer at stations prohibiting bicycle carry-on. Violators risk fines between NT$1,500 and NT$7,500.
