Surrounded by jubilant audience, Mayor Hau Lung-bin cut the cake to celebrate both the first birthday of Yuan Zai the star panda and the centennial of Taipei Zoo on July 6.

He also accepted a donation of NT$3 million from Shin Kong Life Foundation on behalf of Taipei Zoo and the Zoological Society of Taipei for chimpanzee conservation.Hau noted that Yuan Zai has enjoyed a huge popularity since her birth in 2013. The baby panda took local residents by storm and attracted the attention of international animal protection community. He expressed his gratitude to the staff members for their meticulous care of the endangered panda bear. Her wellbeing is a source of pride and happiness for the city. Hau also gave credit to the staff for their equal care of other rare denizens of the zoo, including Formosan Black Bear, Formosan sika deer, and Malayan tapir. During a traditional vocational inclination test for the one-year-old cub, Yuan Zai grabbed objects symbolizing ‘teacher, painter, flight attendant, and engineer.’ Amused by her future career selection, the mayor encouraged kids attending the event to try out different things and develop diverse interests. This will help them unlock their potential and become better positioned for career growth.
