Exhibition on Marco Polo Bridge Incident, War of Resistance at Zhongshan Hall

Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening ceremony of an exhibition on the Marco Polo Bridge Incident and the War of Resistance (Second Sino-Japanese War) at Zhongshan Hall on July 7.

He also joined President Ma Ying-jeou and representatives from the families of combatants who took part in the War of Resistance in presenting flower caskets before the War of Resistance Victory and Taiwan Retrocession Memorial Plaque at Zhongshan Hall Plaza. During his address, the mayor noted that this year marks the 77th anniversary of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, 120th anniversary of the First Sino-Japanese War, and the 69th anniversary of Taiwan Retrocession. He explained that the Department of Cultural Affairs selected Zhongshan Hall as the venue of the exhibition because it was the building where the formal ceremony of the surrender of Taiwan took place, emphasizing the endurance demonstrated by the Chinese people during the War of Resistance.Hau stressed that during the 8-year period of the War of Resistance, casualties in the China front exceeded 20 million, including civilians, soldiers, and officers. Over 30 million families were displaced during the turmoil years. He believes that national honor was won through the hardship of this war, and that today’s peace and prosperity cannot be obtained without the sacrifices of our forefathers.During the press conference, President Ma took the opportunity to present the War of Resistance 77th Anniversary Medal to both surviving combatants and representatives from the families of deceased soldiers.The exhibition at Zhongshan Hall will last until the end of August.
