Taipei to Vie for 2014 City Climate Leadership Awards

Taipei will compete against London and Mexico City for the top honor in the category of ‘Air Quality’ in the 2014 City Climate Leadership Awards. The capital of Taiwan is the only Asian city among 26 global cities shortlisted in the annual awards.

Winners will be announced in New York City on September 22.Jointly organized by Siemens and C40 (C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group), the City Climate Leadership Awards recognize cities which demonstrate leadership in promoting environmental sustainability based on ten categories. Eligible participants for the competition include the 58 member cities of C40 and 120 cities having been ranked by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Green City Index. Taipei’s proposal ‘Clean Air–It’s your move’ highlights its ambition to improve air quality through rewarding low-pollution vehicles and promoting the use of public transportation such as MRT, public bus, and YouBike. Through the city’s effort, air pollutant emissions have been significantly reduced. The days which indicated poor air quality PSI (Pollutant Standards Index) >100 in 2013 stood at 6; this is a drastic drop of 91% from 68 days in 2004. The Department of Environmental Protection noted that an inter-agency approach has been adopted by the city government to create a safe, convenient, and green transportation network—allowing residents to move around in an energy-saving and efficient way that will help create a low-carbon city.
