Mayor Meets NYC Council Speaker

A delegation led by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito of New York City Council arrived at city hall on July 28. Mayor Hau Lung-bin met with the dignitaries and exchanged experiences on city administration. The talks covered topics from green policies to transportation infrastructure.

According to Hau, Taipei is the first metropolis in the world to achieve the objective of “zero landfill, total recycling.” The residents of this city have also developed a habit of sorting and recycling garbage, thereby drastically reducing the amount of waste generated. With less reliance on landfills, former facilities such as the Neihu landfill have been transformed into a spacious green landscape. On the topic of public transportation, the mayor pointed out that the city actively promotes the use of low-polluting transportation tools by encouraging the public to take the MRT and YouBike. Its efforts have helped improve the air quality of Taipei, which has been shortlisted along with London and Mexico City in the 2014 Climate Leadership Awards. The city also excels in the fields of the creation of a safe environment with low crime rates, as well as the establishment of 1999 Citizen Hotline to provide multi-lingual services to address citizens’ problems, Hau reckoned. The mayor also took the opportunity to share the city’s emergency response mechanism and urban renewal visions with his guests. The two leaders both looked forward to more opportunities to share their experiences in the future.
