Expo Park: New Immigrant Fair to Take Place Aug. 23

The Department of Civil Affairs (DCA) will hold a fair highlighting the cultural diversity of the city’s new immigrants at Taipei Expo Park’s Expo Dome on August 23.

The event will feature an array of activities including classes on different career skills, exotic cuisines, family reading programs, kids’ drawing lessons, and fun games.

DCA Commissioner Huang Lu Ching-ju pointed out that as many as 3,000 individuals from new immigrant families and communities have signed up for a variety of competitions of the event.

A press event also took place as a warm-up for the fair, with expatriates dressed in their respective traditional garments presenting ethnic cuisines from Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, Japan, and mainland China.

According to DCA, Taipei boasts an immigrant population of 46,563. To help foreign residents adjust to local life, the agency has been conducting classes every year since 2000. The classes span language education, culture introduction, dances, computer training, and cooking. Borough officials also pay house visits to provide direct assistance and care for these new members of the community.

All citizens are welcomed to the fair on August 23. To register for activities, please call 1999 Citizen Hotline (ext. 6261) or contact your local district office.
