Drenched Mayor Raises Awareness for ALS Patients

Mayor Hau Lung-bin dumped a bucket of ice-cold water over his head in the night of August 18. He completed the “Ice Bucket Challenge” in front of city hall to help raise awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Complying with the rules of the charity challenge, Hau nominated Director Luc Besson (who is currently visiting Taipei to promote his movie ‘Lucy’), Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, and Health and Welfare Minister Chiu Wen-ta to complete the dare. Hau noted that it was a pleasure for him to take part in the international campaign to support ALS patients, a topic he also brought up with the French director during a dinner. Showing his support for the cause, Besson said he would make donations instead and appointed Assistant Director David – as well as actor Ken – of the film ‘Lucy’ to participate in the challenge. As for the reasons for choosing Mayor Hu and Minister Chiu for the dare, Hau remarked that Hu is committed to protecting rights of people with the rare disease and that the sound planning on the part of Ministry of Health and Welfare is vital for the long-term care of ALS patients.
