New Domain “.taipei” to Strengthen City Image

Taipei City Government sealed a registry agreement with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to operate the top level domain (TLD) “.taipei” on August 20.

The papers were signed by Mayor Hau Lung-bin and ICANN board member Wu Kuo-wei.According to Hau, the City will start adopting the new domain name “.taipei” for a number of online services portals this year, including 1999 Citizen Hotline (1999.taipei), Youbike (youbike.taipei), and websites of departments and agencies under the city government. The City also plans to start accepting applications for second level domain name under “.taipei” from corporations and businesses starting November 2014. As “.taipei” is set to become an important landmark in the online world, Hau believes it will help boost the image of the capital and promote tourism. He invites organizations and individuals that identify with Taipei to register their domain name under the “.taipei” TLD and introduce the city to the greater international community. The mayor added that one of Taipei’s visions as an innovative city is to promote urban development through cloud and digital technologies. The signing of the “.taipei” operation contract is the result of a two-year-long collaboration between the city government and ICANN. With the finalizing of the agreement, Taipei has now entered the ranks of international metropolises such as Tokyo, New York, London, and Paris in providing the city-specific TLD registration service.
