TRTC Reports Initial Success with Coin Recharge Option for EasyCard

With the ongoing refurbishment of automatic ticket issuing machines (ATIMs) at local MRT stations, Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) reported a rising number of transactions using coins to recharge EasyCards, showing the success of the new service.

According to the agency, it has completed the replacement of 120 ATIMs across 62 stations along the Xindian Line, Zhonghe Line, and Wenhu Line. In addition to the standard ticket vending and EasyCard recharging functions, the new machines also offer passenger the option of recharging EasyCard with spare change. Within a month of the inauguration of this new service (from July 11 to August 11), the 120 ATIMs accumulated a total of 630,000 coins. If these coins were stacked together, the height would be equivalent to 1.5 times the height of Taipei 101.TRTC reminds passengers that recharging EasyCards with spare change is a good way of reducing the number of jingling coins in their pockets. The agency is also working with other city departments to offer convenient services for passengers. One of the innovations is the acceptance of Taipei’s roadside parking fee payment at all MRT stations. The collaboration with Parking Management and Development Office was inaugurated on December 31, 2013.Another collaboration project with the Social Welfare Department allows senior citizens and disabled residents to extend the validity period of their concession EasyCard at MRT stations, saving them an extra trip to the local district office. The renewal process is simple: place the concession EasyCard onto the EQM (ticket readers) located next to the information booth at MRT stations. For more information on these services, please call TRTC’s 24-hour Customer Hotline (TEL:02-218-12345) or the 1999 Citizen Hotline.
