Mayor Praises Taichung’s BRT System

Mayor Praises Taichung’s BRT System

Accompanied by Taichung Mayor Jason Hu, Mayor Hau Lung-bin took his first trip onboard the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system during a trip to the city in central Taiwan on August 31.

The mayor made the visit after receiving an invitation from his Taichung counterpart last month. The two boarded the bus at Zhongzheng Elementary School station and rode all the way to the Maple Garden station. Hau remarked that this is his first trip on the BRT. He is impressed by the well-illuminated stations and the comfortable and roomy interior, as well as the artistic designs. He noted that from his conversation with other passengers, many were pleased with the new transportation option.Noting a number of criticisms about the rapid bus transit, Hau recalled the resistance Taipei City Government encountered when constructing its first MRT line – the Muzha Line (now part of the Wenhu Line). Even former mayor Chen Shui-bian, who opposed to the MRT when he was running for mayor, recognized the potentials of the rapid transit system and went ahead in plans to expand the MRT network. Today, Taipei’s MRT is a metro system that meets top global standards and has become the pride of Taiwan. After riding the BRT, Hau described the policy as a success and extremely innovative for Taiwan. Up to this point, no city on the island has chosen to tackle the issue of mass transit with a BRT system. He believes that the BRT not only helps reduce the pressure on Taichung’s transportation, but has also become a role model for other municipalities.
