City Promotes Taipei Tourism in Guangdong Travel Expo

A city delegation led by Deputy Commissioner Chiu Peng-hsin of Department of Information Tourism (TPEDOIT) participated in the 2014 China (Guangdong) International Tourism Industry Expo to promote independent travel to Taipei. The event took place between August 29 and 31.

“BMW”–the theme of Taipei Pavilion at the travel expo—is short for “Bus & Bike, Metro, and Walk.” The agency sought to seduce mainland tourists to the capital of the island with its convenient transportation network comprising 165 YouBike bike rental stations (5,416 bikes), 283 public bus routes (3,502 buses), and 11 MRT lines (109 stations). To offer Guangdong residents a taste of what Taipei has to offer in terms of cuisines, sample platters featuring award-winning pineapple cakes, nougats, beef noodle, among other famous snacks were provided at the venue. According to Chiu, Taiwan has seen a remarkable 1.96 million tourists from the mainland between January and June in 2014. Nearly 97 percent of these travelers visited Taipei during their sojourn on the island. To woo potential Chinese visitors – especially those from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, DOIT took the opportunity to tout customized solo-travel packages at bargain prices as low as RMB 2,470. These special offers were made in hopes that mainland tourists will be enticed to experience the charms of Taipei.
