City Celebrates Opening of New English Village for Elementary School Kids

Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening ceremony for the English Village at Dongmen Elementary School on September 9.

The establishment of the new center marked the fulfillment of the promise to create one English Village for each of the city’s administrative districts.According to the mayor, the goal of the English villages is to provide city students with an English learning environment that simulates real-life situations. Students immersed in such comprehensive environment will be able to strengthen their listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills.Hau remarked that each of the 12 English villages incorporate the unique characteristics of their respective administrative districts. For example, the English Village in Beitou highlights hot spring culture, while the one in Songshan District recreates an airport setting.Since the establishment of the first English Village in Taipei, over 53,000 students have attended sessions at the facility to improve their English skills. In the future, the opening days of each center will extend to four-and-a-half day. He welcomes elementary school students to experience the culture of each district and sharpen their English at these language centers. To enhance the global competitiveness of local elementary school students, Taipei City Government is the first in the nation to include English classes for first grade students. For third graders through six graders, it also extended the length of English lessons from two sessions to three sessions starting in the 2011 school year.
