Take a Seat on Giant Water Lilies at Shaungxi Park

Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended a press event for the 2014 Aquatic Plants Exhibition at Shaungxi Park on September 11. One of the highlights of the scenic park is a pool occupied by 85 giant Victoria water lilies. The staff members at Parks and Street Lights Office (PSLO) have paid a lot of attention to taking care of and nurturing these plants.

Hau noted that he is a frequent visitor to Shaungxi Park. Acknowledging the difficulty of growing these rare plants, he lauded PSLO for putting much effort into the task. The new tourist attraction boasts water lilies with leaves up to 155 cm in diameter and capable of sustaining objects as heavy as 50 kg. Residents are invited to register online for a rare opportunity to “sit” on the water lilies during the weekend of September 21. To give kids a taste of “waterborne fun,” the organizer invited a group of kindergarten children to take turns sitting or standing on the water lilies. The mayor, dressed in a waterproof jumpsuit, entered the pool to assist them. Following the press event, Hau toured the park and took some time to appreciate children’s drawings and interact with park visitors. He humorously told the crowd that he needs to lose some weight first if he wants to sit on the leaves of a Victoria water lily.
