Growing Organic Vegetables at Neihu Incineration Plant

Can you imagine growing fruits and vegetables inside a garden at your local incinerator facility? For the staff at Neihu Incineration Plant, this is a part of their daily routine.

Inside a small garden located on the facility’s premises, off-duty staff members are able to grow different kinds of vegetables. From bananas, apples, okras, to pepper, the garden is teeming with greens and insect noise, while the harvest promises to provide abundant food ingredients for the kitchen.According to the manager of Neihu Incineration Plant Wu Wen-yuan, many employees at the facility are encouraged to plant vegetables at the quiet corner after work. Wu added that the facility produces its own soil ameliorant which is also employed in the garden. The organic ameliorant is made from the residual water which underwent biochemical refining process. The original liquid component came from kitchen waste collected by the garbage transportation crew of the Department of Environmental Protection. In addition to experimenting with the plant’s “homemade” soil ameliorant, the garden also serves as an example of environmental education for visiting students, teaching them the importance of resource recycling and conservation.Residents of Taipei and Xizhi District are eligible to receive samples of the soil ameliorant made by the facility. Those interested should contact Division 1 of the Neihu Incineration Plant (TEL: 2796-1833, ext. 266).
