Taipei, New Taipei Mayors Attend Car Free Day Event

Addressing the participants at the Car Free Day event on September 28, Mayor Hau Lung-bin remarked that thanks to the widespread support of citizens for green transportation policies such as YouBike, Taipei City is the only Asian city to be shortlisted in the Air Quality category of the City Climate Leadership Award 2014.

Taipei City is the winner of the Citizen’s Choice category of the competition.The mayor stressed that this is a landmark achievement for the central government, Taipei City Government, and New Taipei City Government in the implementation of policies promoting green transportation. Other dignitaries attending the event include Transportation and Communications Minister Yeh Kuang-shih, New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu, and chairman King Liu of Giant Manufacturing Corporation.Hau pointed out that the City has developed a good working relation with New Taipei City and that Mayor Chu is a good friend of his. With the collaboration between Taipei and New Taipei in areas ranging from public bus to the coordination of traffic lighting, the result of the two cities working together has seen success in improving traffic conditions in Greater Taipei. He noted that Mayor Chu’s t-shirt with the slogans “YouBike, WeBike, AllBike” represents the ongoing collaborations between the two cities with the public rental bicycle system. Hopefully, residents will be able to hire and return bicycles across the borders of the two municipalities.The 2014 Car Free Day event is co-organized by Taipei City Government and New Taipei City Government to promote green transportation and public transportation. With the upcoming inauguration of MRT Songshan Line and continued construction of New Taipei’s “3 Rings and 3 Lines” rapid transit network, the resulting mass transit network will further improve the convenience of public transportation in the region.
