STaipei, A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Yilan County in eastern Taiwan at 6:29 p.m. Wednesday, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported shortly after the temblor.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 23.5 kilometers east southeast of the Yilan County government office at a depth of 70.3 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.
The earthquake’s maximum intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was felt in Nan’ao and Niudou in southern Yilan County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.
An intensity of 2 was registered in central Yilan County, Hualien County, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Taichung City and Miaoli County.
No casualties or damage were immediately reported.
