Taipei, The Central Bank said Thursday that it has increased its budget for issuing NT$10 (US$0.32) coins in 2019 due to the popularity of playing claw machines.
During a report before the Finance Committee of the Legislative Yuan, Central Bank Governor Yang Chin-long (???) said the bank has proposed a budget of NT$1.7 billion to issue new currency, in which NT$1 billion — some 60 percent of the total budget — will be spent on issuing NT$10 coins.
Yang said the coins are needed because of the booming claw-machine industry.
There are now 3,353 claw-machine companies, with some 10,000 claw-machine stores around Taiwan, which is more than the number of 7-11 and Family Mart convenience stores combined, according to Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chiang Yung-chang (???).
