By the Numbers: Climbing Mount Everest

The climbing season for Mount Everest recently ended, following the return of colder weather and hurricaneforce winds at the world’s highest peak.

This year was the deadliest climbing season since 2015, and images of a traffic jam of climbers trying to reach Everest’s summit renewed questions about how to manage dangerous overcrowding on the peak. Some have called for a limit on the number of climbing permits issued or tougher standards for climbers and guides.
