CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 13,019 new COVID-19 cases, 29 deaths

Taiwan on Sunday reported 13,019 new COVID-19 infections and 29 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 30s to their 90s. All except two had underlying health conditions, while 13 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

The number of new cases represented a 2.2-percent drop from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

Meanwhile, the 101,136 cases reported from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 were down 3.2 percent from the number reported from Nov. 20 to Nov. 26, indicating that the current surge in Omicron cases that began in late August and peaked in mid-October remained on a downward trend.

COVID-19-related deaths still remain stubbornly high, however, with Taiwan tied for 12th in the world in COVID deaths per 100,000 population over the past week, according to the New York Times.

Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 81 new COVID-19 cases classified as moderate and 27 as severe.
