Taiwan reported 14,859 new cases of COVID-19, of which all but 186 were domestic, and 24 deaths from the disease on Tuesday, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The number of new cases represented a 25.4-percent decline from the same day a week earlier, CECC data showed.

The deceased ranged in age from their 60s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health issues, while 16 of them had not received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine as recommended by the government, the CECC said.

Also on Tuesday, the CECC reported 27 new cases classified as moderate and 19 as severe.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei recorded the highest number of new cases with 2,746, followed by Kaohsiung with 1,861 and Taichung with 1,722.

Taipei reported 1,507 new cases, Taoyuan 1,395, Tainan 1,215, Changhua 775, Hsinchu County 456, Miaoli 409, Hsinchu City 342, Pingtung 336 and Yunlin 293.

Yilan had 278 cases, Keelung 265, Nantou 249, Chiayi County 218, Hualien 195, Chiayi City 152, Taitung 108, Kinmen 94, Penghu 55 and the Matsu Islands two, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 9,368,483 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 47,345 classified as imported.

With the 24 deaths reported on Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 16,146.
