Taiwan reported 17,085 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths from the disease on Sunday, the fourth consecutive day the single-day total exceeded 10,000 cases, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases consisted of 16,936 domestically transmitted infections and 149 cases that were contracted abroad, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) said at a CECC briefing.
Of the new domestic cases reported Sunday, 9,983 were asymptomatic, according to the CECC.
COVID-19 deaths
The three deaths from COVID-19 complications involved three men between the ages of 60 and 100 who had been previously listed as severe cases and had histories of chronic illnesses.
One of the men, who was over 90 years old and mostly restricted to his bed, died on April 25. The man was not vaccinated and had diabetes and a history of stroke, according to the CECC.
He was listed as a contact of a live-in relative who tested positive for COVID-19 and was in home quarantine when he died.
Another man, who was in his 60s and had received two COVID-19 vaccine jabs, died on April 27. He had a history of diabetes, chronic renal failure that required hemodialysis, and heart trouble.
The man was admitted to the hospital after being confirmed to have COVID-19, and he died after going into cardiac arrest.
The remaining man, who was also in his 60s and had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, died on April 27. He had a history of peptic ulcers and stomach bleeding.
The man was given medical attention after he fell unconscious and had difficulty breathing and suffered from heavy stomach bleeding while in the hospital. The causes of death were COVID-19, gastrointestinal bleeding, and respiratory failure, the CECC said.
Of the 89,990 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan from Jan. 1 to April 30, 226 have been classified as moderate infections and 28 as severe, accounting for 0.25 percent and 0.03 percent of the total, respectively.
All other cases have involved only mild symptoms or the individuals were asymptomatic, according to the CECC.
New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases on Sunday with 5,810, followed by Taipei with 4,134, Taoyuan with 2,784, Taichung with 816, and Keelung with 792.
Kaohsiung reported 436 cases, Tainan 321, Yilan County 314, Hualien County 275, Changhua County 221, Hsinchu County 191, Pingtung County 185, Hsinchu City 157, Yunlin County 147, Miaoli County 83, Nantou County 76, Taitung County 75, Chiayi County 46, and Chiayi City 33.
Penghu County reported 19, Kinmen County 18 cases, and the Matsu Islands three, the CECC said.
Meanwhile, of the 149 new imported cases, 138 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan on Saturday, according to the CECC.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed 132,955 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 121,515 domestically transmitted infections.
With three deaths reported Sunday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country reached 868, and 15 of them have been recorded this year.
