CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 20,306 cases, 62 deaths

Taiwan reported 20,306 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, all but 37 of which were locally transmitted, and 62 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 20,269 new domestic cases represented a 26.4-percent drop from a week earlier, the CECC said.

The deceased ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s. All but two had underlying health issues, while 22 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the CECC also reported 37 new cases classified as severe and 100 classified as moderate.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases with 3,225, followed by Kaohsiung with 2,844 and Taichung with 2,659.

Taoyuan reported 2,023 new cases, Tainan 1,988, Taipei 1,683, Changhua County 1,131, Pingtung County 652, Yunlin County 555, Hsinchu County 523, Miaoli County 473 and Hsinchu City 447.

Chiayi County had 402 cases, Nantou County 378, Yilan County 296, Chiayi City 293, Keelung 269, Hualien County 177, Taitung County 135, Penghu County 58, Kinmen County 52, and the Matsu islands six, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 7,996,490 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 36,845 classified as imported.

With the 62 deaths reported on Friday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 13,441.
