Taiwan reported 2,481 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as well as one new severe infection from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new cases consisted of 2,386 domestically transmitted infections — representing an increase of over 40 percent from Tuesday’s 1,626 local cases and another single-day high — as well as 95 cases contracted abroad.
The CECC also reported that eight patients had developed moderate illnesses and another one is in a severe condition.
The eight patients with moderate infections range in age from 30 to 100. One patient is unvaccinated, three had gotten one COVID-19 vaccine dose, one had received two doses, and the remaining three had gotten three doses.
The patient with a severe infection is a woman in her 70s who had gotten one vaccine shot, the CECC said.
Of the 13,164 domestic cases recorded nationwide from Jan. 1 to April 19, 51 have been classified as moderate infections and five as severe, together accounting for 0.43 percent of the total, while the other 13,108 cases were either mild or asymptomatic, according to the CECC.
On Wednesday, New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases with 822, followed by Taipei with 471, Taoyuan with 387, Keelung with 191, and Kaohsiung with 97.
Yilan County reported 89, Hualien County 86, Taichung 76, Pingtung County 31, Tainan 24, Hsinchu County 23, Changhua and Nantou counties 17 each, Miaoli County 16, Yunlin County 14, and Hsinchu City 11.
Taitung County reported five cases, Chiayi City and the Matsu Islands three each, Chiayi County two cases, and Penghu County one.
Of the 95 new imported cases, 82 of them were travelers who tested positive on arrival to Taiwan, according to the CECC.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed 40,186 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 30,147 domestically transmitted infections, CECC data shows.
With no deaths reported Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 856.
