CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 25,171 new COVID-19 cases, 74 deaths

Taiwan reported 25,171 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, all but 264 of which were domestic infections, and 74 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The individuals whose deaths were reported Thursday ranged in age from 3 years old to over 90. Thirty-one of those who died were unvaccinated, while 71 had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

Among the three with no chronic illness or severe disease, one had been unvaccinated and two had gotten three vaccine doses, according to the CECC.

The 3-year-old who passed away was admitted to hospital on July 12 after he developed a fever, diarrhea, and lethargy. His condition further deteriorated the next day and he was admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU), and he passed away due to myocarditis on July 17.

Also on Thursday, the CECC said that 82 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 149 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.

Among the severe cases are four children, three of whom have been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), and one with pneumonia.

The child with pneumonia is an 8-month-old who developed a fever and a cough on July 6. The next day, he was taken to the hospital after his appetite decreased and he was diagnosed with pneumonia and septic shock, the CECC said.

On top of testing positive for COVID-19, he was also found to have been infected with streptococcus pneumoniae and pseudomonas aeruginosa. He is currently receiving treatment in an ICU, according to the CECC.

The children diagnosed with MIS-C include a 10-month-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy.

They tested positive for COVID-19 between May 11 to June 1, and began to develop symptoms including a fever, rash, and bloodshot eyes, from late June to early July. After receiving treatment in hospital, they were discharged between July 4 and July 15, the CECC said.
