Taiwan on Monday reported 5,221 new COVID-19 cases, as well as 15 new moderate infections and one severe infection but no deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The new daily cases, which surpassed 5,000 for the second straight day, consisted of 5,108 domestically transmitted infections and 113 cases that were contracted abroad.
The CECC also reported that 15 people, aged in their 20s to their 90s, had developed moderate infections, while one patient in his 80s had developed a severe infection.
One of the 16 individuals with a moderate or severe infection was unvaccinated, while the others had received between one and three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Of the 31,462 domestic cases recorded nationwide from Jan. 1 to April 24, 103 were classified as moderate infections and nine as severe, accounting for 0.33 percent and 0.03 percent of the total, respectively.
All other cases have displayed either mild symptoms or have been asymptomatic, according to the CECC.
New Taipei reported the highest number of domestic cases on Monday, with 1,861, followed by Taipei with 1,050, Taoyuan with 696, Keelung with 339, and Yilan County with 317.
Taichung reported 201 cases, Hualien County 148, Kaohsiung 126, Hsinchu County 65, Tainan 63, Changhua County 53, Hsinchu City 43, Pingtung County 33, Miaoli County 29, Taitung County 25, Nantou County 18, Yunlin County 17, and Chiayi County 11.
Chiayi City reported nine cases, Matsu Islands two, and Kinmen and Penghu counties one each.
Meanwhile, of the 113 new imported cases, 106 were travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, according to the CECC.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed 61,686 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 51,170 domestically transmitted infections.
With no new deaths reported Monday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 856.
