CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 60,103 new COVID-19 cases, 109 deaths

Taiwan on Monday recorded 60,103 new COVID-19 cases — 60,042 domestically transmitted and 61 imported — and 109 deaths, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The 109 patients reported Monday to have died of COVID-19 complications ranged in age from their 40s to 90s, including 106 who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, the CECC said.

The CECC also said Monday that 105 previously reported COVID-19 cases had since developed into severe infections, while 363 other patients had developed moderate symptoms of the disease.

These included three children who developed severe symptoms and signs of encephalitis but have since recovered and been discharged from hospital, the CECC said.

That brings the number of children aged 12 and under who have developed severe infections to 25. Fourteen of those had encephalitis, five of whom passed away, eight whose condition has improved, and one currently being treated in an intensive care unit.

Of the 1,864,733 domestic cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 1,579 have been classified as severe infections and 3,796 as moderate, accounting for 0.08 percent and 0.20 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data valid as of May 29.

In all other cases, patients were either asymptomatic or had mild infections, the CECC said.
