Taiwan on Friday reported 68 new COVID-19 cases — three domestically transmitted infections and 65 that originated abroad — and one new death from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The domestic cases involved an individual who contracted the disease from an imported case earlier this month, and a father and a son whose source of infection remained unknown, according to the CECC.

The person who died was a Taiwanese man in his 60s who suffered from chronic illnesses, the CECC said, which had reported him as an imported case from the Philippines on Jan. 30. He died on Feb. 23.

In addition to the domestic cases, Taiwan also reported 65 imported cases on Friday, 21 of which involved travelers who tested positive upon arrival in Taiwan.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 20,304 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 15,404 domestically transmitted infections.

With one death reported Friday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 853.
