CORONAVIRUS/Visiting foreign nationals get new visa extension over COVID-19

Taiwan will grant an additional 30-day extension of stay to foreign visitors who entered the country on or before March 21, 2020, and have no record of overstaying, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) announced Tuesday.

Due to the continued severity of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, the automatic extension will apply to foreign nationals who entered Taiwan visa free or on a visitor’s or landing visa on or before that date, the NIA said in a statement.

The government has previously announced automatic 30-day visa extensions this year on Jan. 13, Feb. 5, March 12, April 13, May 13, June 10, July 12, Aug. 11, Sept. 10, and Oct. 7 to avoid forcing foreign nationals to leave Taiwan at a time when COVID-19 continues to affect the world and travel restrictions are in effect.

The agency said the extension policy will continue to be reviewed and adjusted as necessary in accordance with the Central Epidemic Command Center’s assessment of COVID-19 conditions.

Though the extension will be automatically registered on the agency’s systems and does not require an application, visitors who would like formal documentation of the extension can ask to have their passports stamped at the agency’s service stations around the country, it said.
