ELECTIONS 2022/Taipei mayoral candidates’ TV debate

The three main candidates in the 12-horse Taipei mayoral race attended a TV debate ahead of Taiwan’s Nov. 26 local government elections on Saturday.

The three prominent candidates running for Taipei mayor — Kuomintang Legislator Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), former Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and former Deputy Taipei Mayor Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊) — attended a TV debate co-organized by Sanlih E-Television (SET) and TVBS Media Inc. that afternoon.

Chiang, a two-term legislator of the opposition KMT, began his presentation in Hokkien, vowing that he plans to rebuild Taipei as the richest city it once was, from a city some considered old and past its prime.

Huang, a former Taipei City Councilor of 21 years before becoming a deputy Taipei mayor duing incumbent Ko Wen-je’s (柯文哲)  second four-term in 2019, touted her knowledge and experience of running the city, saying she hopes to be the first female mayor of the capital city of Taiwan.

Running as an independent, Huang is backed by Ko and the Taiwan People’s Party he founded in August 2019.

Meanwhile, Chen, who supported Ko during his first run for Taipei Mayor, said the city has the best resources as Taiwan’s capital city, and his priorities include resolving traffic problems facing Taipei’s Neihu District, pushing urban renewal and social housing, as well as offering more supports to new parents.
