The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued heavy rain warnings for northern Taiwan on Sunday, cautioning against mudslides and falling rocks in mountainous areas as seasonal winds strengthen and moisture moves in from southern China.
People in the north coast, Yilan County in the northeast, and mountainous areas in Greater Taipei could expect rainfall of over 80 millimeters in 24 hours or over 40 mm in one hour, the weather bureau said.
There is also a chance for showers in Hualien and Taitung counties and mountainous areas in central Taiwan, according to the CWB.
Sunday temperatures in northern Taiwan could range from 18-23 degrees Celsius, and 21-30 degrees elsewhere, forecasters said.
Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said drier and warmer weather is expected from Monday to Wednesday as seasonal winds weaken.
Meanwhile, he said, a tropical depression over waters east of the Philippines could become a tropical storm Sunday evening.
As of 2 a.m. Sunday, the depression was moving north at a speed of 22 kilometers per hour toward Japan, CWB data showed. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 43.2 km per hour, with gusts of up to 72 km per hour.
Wu said, however, the depression would not threaten Taiwan as it is far away.
