High temperature warnings issued for parts of Taiwan

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Saturday issued warnings of high temperature for four administrative areas in northern, eastern and southern Taiwan, and cautioned the public against engaging in unnecessary outdoor activities.

An orange warning was issued for mountainous areas and valleys in southern Taiwan’s Pingtung County, indicating maximum temperatures could climb above 38 degrees Celsius, or linger around 36 degrees for at least three consecutive days, according to the bureau.

There are also chances for foehn wind in southeastern Taiwan, as hot and dry southwesterly winds descend on the region, after crossing the Central Mountain Range, the CWB said.

Hualien and Taitung counties in the east and Taipei City in the north were issued a yellow warning, which suggests daytime highs of over 36 degrees, forecasters said.

According to bureau data, Dawu Township in Taitung topped all regions to record the country’s highest temperature at 36.6 degrees at around 11 a.m. Saturday.
