Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Lin Wei-chou (???) narrowly won the main opposition party’s primary Saturday for mayor of Zhubei City, a township-level city in Hsinchu County.

The KMT revealed that Lin Wei-chou obtained 51.998 percent of the vote in the primary, edging out his only opponent, Zhubei City Representative Council Chairman Lin Chi-hsien (???), who finished on 48.002 percent.

According to the KMT, the Zhubei primary result was based on two surveys that the party commissioned the United Daily News and Shih Hsin University to conduct from May 18 to 20, with each survey receiving around 1,000 responses.

In the wake of his triumph, Lin Wei-chou took to social media to thank the city’s residents for their support, while pledging to build Zhubei into a more livable city by utilizing his years of experience working at the Hsinchu County Council and in the Legislature.

Lin Wei-chou, a member of the Legislative Yuan since 2016, served as a Hsinchu county councilor for seven years before leaving for an initial stint in the Legislature in 2005.

After leaving the Legislature for the first time in 2008, he later returned to the county council for another six-year term between 2010 and 2016.

Lin Wei-chou accused the current Zhubei City government – headed up by independent politician Ho Kan-ming (???), who is restricted by term limits from running again – of negligence and failing to fulfill the expectations of the city’s residents.

Lin Wei-chou added that he would “listen carefully to the needs of the people” and strive to turn his vision of ensuring the well-being of Zhubei’s 206,000 residents into reality.

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party has yet to officially nominate its candidate for the Zhubei mayoral race, which will take place during local elections scheduled for Nov. 26.

Following his defeat, Lin Chi-hsien said he would give his utmost support to Lin Wei-chou’s upcoming election campaign.
