Linkou District reports two new dengue fever cases

Taipei,  Dengue fever is continuing to spread in New Taipei, with two new cases of indigenous dengue fever infection reported in the city’s Linkou District, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Monday.

One of the patients is a woman in her 40s who developed muscle pain, a headache, rashes, nausea and vomiting from Oct. 16 to 20 and went to see a doctor three times.

She was hospitalized on Oct. 21 and was eventually diagnosed with dengue fever, CDC deputy head Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said.

The woman usually commutes from her residence in Dingfu Village to her workplace in Guishan District, and an investigation into the source of her infection is ongoing.

To date, a total of eight people who have had contact with the woman have no symptoms and all tested negative for the virus, according to Chuang.

The other case involved a man in his 50s who developed a fever and joint pain from Oct. 14 to 19 and had twice sought medical treatment before being hospitalized on Oct. 23. He was also diagnosed with dengue fever.

The man usually travels from Lilin Village where he lives to Chunghu Village for work. His workplace is near the home of a person who contracted dengue fever about 10 days ago, Chuang said.

There are many several vegetable farms on the periphery of the man’s workplace and whether a cluster effect has developed there is still to be determined, according to Chuang.

A total of 17 people have had contact with the man and none of them have symptoms. Thirteen have tested negative for the virus, while two are undergoing testing and two others will soon be tested, according to Chuang.

Linlin Village is near the Linkou MRT station and the Mitsui Outlet Park, according to Google Maps.

So far this year, Taiwan has reported 68 indigenous dengue fever cases, of which 48 are in New Taipei (37 in Sanxia, three each in Luzhou and Linkou, two in Tucheng, and one each in Banqiao, Zhonghe, Shulin), and 20 are in Taoyuan, CDC data shows.
