A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck at sea off northeastern Taiwan at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The epicenter of the temblor was located about 42.7 kilometers east of the Yilan County government complex, at a depth of 5.9 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.
The earthquake’s highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Yilan and Hualien counties, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, representing perceptible swaying of buildings.
The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Taichung City and Nantou County, the bureau said.
