Magnitude 5.5 and 5.8 earthquakes struck southeastern Taiwan Sunday afternoon, following a magnitude 6.8 temblor in the same region earlier in the day, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).
According to the bureau’s Seismology Center, the epicenter of the magnitude 5.5 earthquake, which struck Taitung County at 4:46 p.m., was located 39.7 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall in Chishang Township at a depth of 13.5 kilometers.
Using Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, which gauges the actual effect of a seismic event, the quake hit 4 in Chishang, Chenggong, Haiduan, Luye and Beinan townships in Taitung, as well as Yuli Township in nearby Hualien County.
Meanwhile, the epicenter of the magnitude 5.8 earthquake, which hit Hualien at 5:39 p.m., was located at 86.8 kilometers south-southwest of Hualien County Hall in Fuli Township at a depth of 9.5 kilometers.
The quake registered an intensity of 5+ in Fuli, and 4 in Yuli Township in Hualien and several areas in Taitung and Nantou County in central Taiwan.
