MediaTek unveils flagship AIoT chip using TSMC technology

MediaTek Inc., the largest IC designer in Taiwan on Wednesday introduced the flagship Genio 1200 chip to its Genio platform for Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) device applications.

MediaTek said the Genio 1200 chip, which will be commercially available in the second half of this year, uses Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s (TSMC’s) advanced 6 nanometer process.

MediaTek is a major client of TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker.

According to MediaTek, the Genio 1200 chip is designed for premium AIoT applications.

With a highly capable octa-core CPU, five-core graphics, dual-core AI processor and advanced multimedia engine, MediaTek said, the Genio 1200 is good for advanced smart home appliances, industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications and other demanding AI-embedded devices.

The Genio 1200 can also receive and process ultra-high definition display and camera inputs from a range of computer vision (CV) applications, MediaTek said.

According to the IC designer, the Genio series, which includes premium, mid-tier and entry-level system-on-chips (SoCs) and modules to address different market and application needs, is a complete platform stack for AIoT with powerful and ultra-efficient chipsets, open platform software development kits (SDKs), and a developer portal with comprehensive resources and tools.

“We look forward to seeing the new user experiences brands bring to life with the Genio 1200 and its powerful AI capability, support for 4K displays and advanced imaging features,” Jerry Yu (???), corporate senior vice president and general manager of MediaTek’s Computing, Connectivity and Metaverse Business Group, said in a statement.

In addition to the Genio 1200 chip, the AIoT platform also includes the Genio 500 designed for retail and commercial IoT applications; Genio 350 designed for hubs in portable and home environments; the Genio 130 designed for thin-OS and cloud-supported voice assistant devices.

On Tuesday, MediaTek reported it posted NT$52.63 billion (US$1.77 billion) in consolidated sales in April, down 11.08 percent from a month earlier with market analysts attributing the decline to lockdowns in China to stem COVID-19 infections.

On a year-on-year basis, however, the latest sales figures were the highest ever for April, up 43.89 percent from last year, according to MediaTek.

In the first four months of this year, MediaTek generated NT$195.34 billion in consolidated sales, up 35.08 percent from a year earlier.

MediaTek expects consolidated sales for the second quarter to range from NT$147 billion to NT$157 billion, up 3-10 percent from the first quarter, saying it expects to see an increase in revenue from chips used in smartphones, smart devices and power management gadgets.

MediaTek has indicated it expects revenue to grow by 20 percent year-on-year in 2022.
