Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) Schools and offices were closed in parts of eastern Taiwan Friday morning in anticipation of the torrential rains and powerful winds expected to be delivered by Typhoon Soudelor beginning later in the day. Yilan and Hualien counties in eastern Taiwan were the only administrative districts to close schools and offices for the entire day as the typhoon approaches from the east.
People on Green Island and Orchid Island off the coast of Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan did not have to go to work or school either, but the rest of the county did until Friday at noon. Other cities and counties will shut down schools and offices beginning Friday night, according to the Executive Yuan’s Directorate-General of Personnel Administration. As of 11:20 a.m., the cities and counties that canceled work and classes Friday evening were Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Chiayi City and Penghu County. Other regions may announce closures later in the day. The typhoon is expected to make landfall in eastern Taiwan in the early hours of Saturday morning.
