Police fatally shoot armed suspect in Tainan raid

A man wanted for allegedly shooting a police officer in Kaohsiung on Tuesday was traced to an apartment in Tainan early Sunday, where he was shot 16 times by police during a raid and later declared dead at a local hospital.

The suspect surnamed Chen (?) had been on the run after shooting a police officer in Kaohsiung on Oct. 26, when police were arresting another suspect in a different case living in the same apartment but a different room.

Kaohsiung police arrested three other individuals in the apartment all suspected of engaging in illicit drugs transactions.

The police officer shot during the Oct. 26 raid suffered minor injuries to his left calf.

Kaohsiung and Tainan police later formed a joint task force to apprehend Chen and traced his location to a rental apartment in Tainan’s West Central District early Sunday.

With an arrest warrant issued by Kaohsiung prosecutors, police raided the apartment at around 12:42 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, the 43-year-old suspect tried to shoot himself in the head twice but the gun misfired.

Chen then pointed the weapon at three police officers who opened fire, shooting him 16 times.

Chen was rushed to nearby National Cheng Kung University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The police confiscated one gun, 14 bullets, four bags of amphetamine with a total weight of 44.6 grams, three sets of drug paraphernalia and NT$62,016 (US$2,228) in cash from Chen’s room.
