Seasonal winds forecast to send mercury to 15 degrees next week

Seasonal northeasterly winds will affect Taiwan next week and send temperatures to as low as 15 degrees Celsius, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Wednesday.

The weather system is expected to affect Taiwan starting Sunday and gather strength on Nov. 22, sending temperatures plunging up to 10 degrees to a chilly 15 degrees in parts of northern Taiwan and to 17-18 degrees in urban areas early on Nov. 23, the CWB said.

Temperatures in central and southern Taiwan will fall to 17 degrees early on Nov. 23, from a high of about 28 degrees a day earlier, the CWB said.

The seasonal winds are expected to bring rain, with continuous precipitation possible around Taiwan, according to the CWB, but the weather system should begin to weaken on Nov. 24.

The bureau was not yet sure if the strength of the weather system will reach the level of a continental cold air mass, but said it would have a better idea in the coming days.

As for Wednesday, the CWB said the cloud cover over Taiwan will thicken, bringing daytime highs down slightly to 24-28 degrees in northern Taiwan and 29-30 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, with temperatures falling to 19-22 degrees around Taiwan at night.

Rain is expected for northern and northeastern Taiwan as well as mountainous areas in the central and southern parts of the island during the day, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality would be good in Yilan, Hualien and Taitung in the east and fair in northern Taiwan and Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south.

But it issued an “orange” alert for central Taiwan, indicating unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups.
