Soldier in Taiwan suspected of attempted suicide after killing 2 sons

Taichung-A 25-year-old Air Force soldier on active service was suspected of murdering his two young sons and then jumping from the top of a building in Taichung, central Taiwan on Sunday.

The professional soldier, identified only by his surname of Hsiao (?), was found lying unconsciously on the ground in Taichung’s Tanzi District as paramedics arrived after receiving a call of a man falling from a tall building early Sunday morning, the city’s Fire Bureau said.

Doctors were still trying to resuscitate the man as of press time.

While having the injured man rushed to a nearby hospital, local police went to the residence of the soldier’s wife, which is located on the third floor of the building, where they discovered the man’s two sons, aged 3 and 2, showing no signs of life.

According to the police, their initial investigation indicates the soldier might be troubled by his relationship with the wife.

The investigation is still ongoing to see if the children were murdered by Hsiao before his fall from the building since there was no eyewitness at the scene, the police said.

It was unclear whether he and his wife were separated and whether he was also living in the apartment.

The Air Force Command Headquarters issued a statement afterwards saying it was aggrieved by the incident. It said it was offering assistance to the family to deal with the aftermath and was assisting police and prosecutors with the investigation.

The Air Force added that it was also stepping up education for soldiers to treasure life, to prevent such incidents from happening again.
