Strong cold air mass to send mercury plunging again next week

A strong cold air mass will send temperatures plummeting across Taiwan early next week, with snow expected on mountains above 3,500 meters, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The cold front will arrive Sunday evening, and mountains over altitudes of 3,500 meters could see snow between Monday and early Tuesday, CWB forecaster Chao Hung (??) told CNA.

Lows of 13-14 degrees Celsius can be expected in low-lying areas around Taiwan during this period, Chao said.

Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said some areas could see temperatures dip to as low as 10 degrees.

Also, rain will accompany the cold front in the northern half of Taiwan and along the east coast starting Monday, with intermittent showers in the south.

The weather will turn drier starting Tuesday, although some parts of the island could still see rain before the cold air mass weakens the following day, the CWB said.
