Taiwan receives bipartisan U.S. congressional praise: Vice President

A bipartisan group of U.S. congressional representatives praised Taiwan for its determination to uphold democracy, Vice President Lai Ching-te (???) said Tuesday during a stopover in Los Angeles en route to Honduran President-elect Xiomara Castro’s inauguration.

Lai spoke of his virtual meeting with 17 members of Congress earlier Tuesday while talking with the Taiwanese community in Los Angeles, also via a video conference, later the same day. He said several members of the U.S. Congress praised Taiwan for sticking to democracy.

Taiwan was hailed for not bowing to pressure from China despite Beijing sending warplanes into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) and conducting disinformation campaigns, Lai said.

The vice president met with the members of Congress in several groups during the video conference which lasted for around 10 hours, according to Taiwan’s Representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim (???), who was also present during the virtual meeting.

“Supporting Taiwan has become a common language in the U.S. Congress,” Hsiao said, adding that a congressman said that it was very rare for congressmen from different parties to reach a consensus on an issue as they had done on Taiwan.

In addition to welcoming Lai, congressmen representing California, Arizona, and Utah also respectively presented their administrative achievements in support of Taiwan, according to Hsiao.

They expressed concerns on issues such as security across the Taiwan Strait, national defense of Taiwan, bilateral trade and economic ties between Taiwan and the U.S., global supply chains and supporting Taiwan to join international organizations, and bilateral Taiwan-U.S. cooperation in technology development, according to Hsiao.
