Taiwanese traditional rush weaving featured at London Craft Week

An exhibition of Taiwanese rush weaving is currently being held in London, allowing visitors to learn more about the centuries-old craft and try it themselves.

The exhibition, titled “Lines of Possibilities: Taiwanese Rush Weaving,” is being held Sept. 30 to Oct. 10 at gallery@oxo, as part of London Craft Week.

Visitors can browse through the displays of hats, baskets, and cushions made by Taiwanese weavers, and they can also view documentaries on the development of the traditional craft.

At the event, workshops are being offered for people to learn the basics of rush weaving, according to Taiwan Yuan-Li Handiwork Association and Taiwan’s Representative Office in the United Kingdom, which jointly organized the event.

Rush weaving in Taiwan involves harvesting and drying a species of sedge grass called Cyperus malaccensis, then softening it for weaving.
