Humanitarian aid from Taiwan bound for Ukraine arrived in Slovakia Tuesday (Slovakia time) with the donation expected to be delivered to Kyiv the next day, according to the Taipei Representative Office, Bratislava.
At a donation ceremony in Slovakia, Taiwan’s representative to the country Lee Nan-yang (???) thanked Slovakian officials for facilitating the donation of humanitarian aid to Ukrainians in need, which included US$1.5 million in cash and supplies such as sleeping bags and baby formula.
“This is just the beginning. We are talking with the Ukrainian NGOs about future humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people,” according to the office, which also welcomed Ukrainian scholars and students in Slovakia to apply for Taiwan’s scholarships.
During the ceremony, Lucia Kišš, director general for Economic and Development Cooperation at Slovakia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said she was grateful for the donation from like-minded friend Taiwan.
Ludmila Verbicka, chairwoman of the Ukrainian-Slovak Initiative, a Slovak NGO helping Ukrainian refugees, also thanked Taiwan for its assistance.
Taiwan’s donations are like “timely rainfall,” Verbicka said, adding that she had been overwhelmed with the aid flooding into Slovakia, which has taken in over 300,000 Ukrainian refugees over the past month.
