Temperatures forecast to top 30 degrees Tuesday

Temperatures around Taiwan will rise above 30 degrees Celsius on Tuesday as strengthening seasonal winds from the southeast bring warm weather and sunny skies, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Daytime highs are likely to top 30 degrees in the south, and 28-30 degrees in northern and central parts of Taiwan, the CWB said, but noted that temperatures at night could fall to 17-18 degrees.

Sporadic showers are only likely in eastern Taiwan and mountainous areas in the north, the CWB forecast.

It also warned that fog could affect visibility in western Taiwan and on the Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu islands.

Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said seasonal northeasterly winds are expected to set in Wednesday, sending temperatures slightly lower, especially in northern Taiwan.

The mercury should recover Thursday, however, and stable weather could continue into Friday, he said.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality will stay good to fair in northern Taiwan and Kinmen and Penghu on Tuesday, but central Taiwan and parts of Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south will face an orange alert, indicating “unhealthy” air for sensitive groups.
