Ukrainians to hold Victory Day parades in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung

Ukrainian nationals and supporters will be holding “Toward Victory” rallies in Taipei, Hsinchu, and Taichung cities on May 8 to show solidarity with Ukrainians amid the ongoing Russian invasion, its organizers announced on Sunday.

The rallies will be held on May 8, known as Victory in Europe Day, which celebrates the formal acceptance of Germany’s surrender by the Allies on May 8, 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe, according to a press release issued by the Taiwan Stands With Ukraine (TSWU).

The rallies will focus on supporting Ukraine in its drive towards victory, and also highlight the Ukrainian resistance and the atrocities of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, said the TSWU, a volunteer organization founded in Taipei in response to the Russian invasion that was launched on February 24.

“Seeing the news from home such as my city bombed into ruins, the war crimes, and our people being killed has been heartbreaking,” said Alex Khomenko, a Ukrainian from Kharkiv and the event’s organizer.

“But the outpouring of support here in Taiwan, both from ordinary Taiwanese and the government, has been incredible. It keeps us going,” Khomenko was quoted as saying in the press release.

The rallies will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on May 8 at Liberty Square of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei, at the Hsinchu Railway Station Square, and at the Civic Square in Taichung, according to the TSWU.

These events will feature speeches by Taiwanese, Ukrainian and other international speakers.

Supporters of Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself are welcome to join the rallies and bring flags or posters with messages of support, according to TSWU.
