Warm Sunday forecast for western Taiwan, rain in the east

The weather in western Taiwan will remain warm on Sunday, with partly cloudy to sunny skies, while cooler temperatures and scattered rain showers are expected in the east, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The bureau forecast daytime highs of 27-30 degrees Celsius in the western half of Taiwan and 24-26 degrees in the east, but said temperatures in both regions will fall to 19-23 degrees at night.

In terms of precipitation, there will be a chance of scattered showers across eastern Taiwan on Sunday, with locally heavy rain possible along the coast, the weather bureau said.

The CWB also cautioned that western Taiwan, as well as the Matsu and Kinmen islands, could see intermittent fog, causing low-visibility conditions between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Wu Der-rong (???), an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said two weather systems are expected to pass over Taiwan in the coming week, bringing unstable weather conditions.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, a southward-moving system will bring rain to much of the country and cooler temperatures to the north, before moving away from the island on Thursday, Wu said.

A second system, forecast to arrive on Saturday night, is expected to cause a sharp drop in temperatures, along with rain and possible thunderstorms, he added.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality on Sunday will be “good” in Yilan, Hualien and Taitung and “moderate” in the northern part of the country.

The air quality from Taichung City down to Pingtung County in the south, however, will be at levels “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” mainly due to ozone pollution and high levels of PM 2.5 particles, the EPA said.
